Biography
Persinger holds a Ph.D. in English with concentrations within American Poetry from Walt Whitman to the Present, Japanese Literature in Translation, and Literature of Travel and Isolation as the main concentration. The travel literature concentration ranges from the ancient to the modern and critiques the works of such writers as Homer, Robert Lewis Stevenson, and J.R.R. Tolkien, to name a few, through post-colonial and post-modern lenses. Furthermore, Persinger's work within translation and translation theory critiques the very act of translation from a post-colonial perspective.
Starting out as an English as a Second Language instructor, he studied second language teaching pedagogy, and have since studied composition, creative writing, and literature pedagogies along with the certification classes held by the Wisconsin Technical College System.

Foxfire: the Selected Poems of Yosa Buson, a Translation
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee2013
My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 - 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and moving writer.
